I had just finished reading my first Phipps novel (the excellent Diver Creed Station) which made me run out and grab another right away. My surprise was at the writer's range; this work is entirely different in its style and execution, although with a similar depth of character development. As someone who often feels she was born in the wrong generation, the fact that this one is set in the early 1900s was a dreamy escape for me. Beware if you also read Diver Creed: this is an entirely differnt genre and approach. But if you love all types of fiction, as well as a page-turning surpise, you won't be disappointed. A Tempest Soul is one of the best books I’ve read this year – another of the best being Oliver Phipp’s book Twelve Minutes Till Midnight. Mr. Phipps is a talented and diverse writer, and manages to write his female protagonist, Gina, with remarkable depth, narrating her multi-faceted life with great emotion. He writes her journey around the world and across our hearts as she faces a plethora of challenges, not the least of which is patriarchal oppression. Perhaps my favorite part of the book was the conversation about the grasping need to own the beautiful talent behind art; Gina learns that if she gives too much of herself to her audience, she will start to lose herself. But is she already lost? Loss of self and art is a theme carefully woven into the plot, yet presented with a light hand and easy manner. If you want a passionate, artistic read, this is it! Think Paulo Coelho’s The Witch of Portabello with flamenco. I can’t recommend this book highly enough!
I really love this book. It is very engaging read where we learnt how the female character Gina handles her life. I love the story line and it is quite unique to the recent stuff that I have been reading.
The characters are outstanding and feel very real.The author writing style and clear and smooth and I just kept on reading until I finished the book I was impressed by this author and I definitely want to see the his next book. Highly recommended.
Everybody loves a comeback, an underdog, that they can root for and see them overcome the impossible. In A Tempest Soul you get that in the main character Gina / Serena, a naive young girl discarded by society. Oliver Phipps creative and artful writing makes you fall in love with this character and care for her. You follow Gina on a journey from a disastrous night where she loses herself, to becoming a world class sought after dancer, that leaves her audience in a trance. On some level I think everyone can relate to Gina's story, and feel moved by her courage to go on. From beginning to end, your heart will be racing as the story unfolds. This is a definite must read feel good story that is hard to put down.
Wow! This book was just amazing! It was the first time I have read a book by Oliver Phipps, and I believe it will not be the last one. The book has a lot of emotions woven into it. It tells a story of a woman who had nothing and then climbed to her success with her power and determination.
The book has really string characters, especially Gina – the main character. I cheered on her all the way though out the book. I was screaming at her (in my mind) in the beginning, and catching my breath every time she succeeded or failed in something. I was something infuriated with her, especially in the last chapters, but afterwards I understood why it was done as it was. The way flamenco was described, made me want to study it and dance, but I just know that I am not that passionate about it, so I would not have that soul inside of me like Gina had. Her life “adventures” are amazing and are really lifely. Is there such word? The book is a story of a life. It has hardships and those hardships make a person harder.
The way Gina behaves and lives makes you wonder if you would have lived like that if you were she. The time frame is described as if the author lives in the 20s and seen everything himself. The style of writing, the words that he chooses to say in this or that situation makes the reader believe he is right next to the characters and not sitting on a couch and reading about them. The book sucked me into it from the first pages. It was the first time I could read in the bus, and I remember my friends were patting me to bring me back to reality.
I loved the book very much. I think it taught me something new. I can’t pinpoint it yet, but I know that after reading it something changed in me. I recommend this book to everyone, especially to whose, who have lost their way in life and try to seek something new. I hope you will enjoy it to its fullest.
My favorite part about this book is definitely how well the protagonist is constructed. Gina is by far one of the most admirable main characters that I have come across as of recently, due to how complex her many personal traits are; author Oliver Phipps offers readers a protagonist who almost seems real due to how well her many strengths and differing weaknesses contrast with each other. Gina experiences many hardships and obstacles as the story progresses, yet she still manages to carry on in a way that shows her true colors, and for me personally, made it hard for me to not root for her – I absolutely wanted to see her succeed and found myself even relating to her in several scenes, which added to the several other reasons of why I found the book to be so easy to become immersed into. “A Tempest Soul” is a story that may seem sad at first, but I ultimately interpret and consider the theme to be one of triumph and growth, and I can’t picture any other protagonist than Gina to help portray and express this message. Highly recommended!
